This is one of our most common questions.
Architects and Architectural Technologists provide similar functions; both roles can plan, design and advise on the construction of buildings, ensuring safety, functionality and sustainable solutions are at the forefront of the design process. As a rule of thumb, Architects are usually more design orientated focusing on the appearance of a building whereas Architectural Technologists usually are more involved in the technical aspects of the project which focus on buildability.
In the United Kingdom (UK) the title ‘Architect’ is protected and regulated by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), variations such as Architectural Technologists, Architectural Consultants have been established due to this protection.
The most important aspect for you as a client before you hire either party is to make sure they hold appropriate insurance and adhere to the professional standards set by their governing bodies. Architects are governed by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) whereas Architectural Technologists are governed by Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT).
An interior designer combines their creative and technical skills to curate and enhance the internal spaces within a building. Throughout the design process they will analyse space, colour, materials, finishes and furniture to present an arrange of project documents including mood boards, colour palettes, 2D and 3D drawings including sections and elevations, electrical plans, material plans, joinery details, and Furniture, Fixings and Equipment (FF&E) packs.
